To help you get publishing, we have developed getting started guide to
familiarize you with basics File Transfer Protocol (FTP). If you are unable to
find help you are looking for, please don't forget that additional help only a
phone call away.
FTP, definition
File Transfer Protocol simplest way transfer files between computers across the
Internet. FTP an application protocol that uses Internet's TCP/IP protocols, just like
HTTP or SMTP. Today, there are hundreds FTP applications, including browser you use
everyday (through which you have probably already FTPed files didn't even know it)!
Get an FTP application
You will need an FTP application if you do not plan use either MS FrontPage
to build your site. (FP has a built publishing feature, therefore you do not need FTP).
Download.com has over 100 different versions that you can download try free
(Choose PC or Mac view lists). We recommend WS_FTP LE 95 or CuteFTP if you
are running Windows OS your workstation, or Fetch if you have a Mac. These
are most
common FTP applications, therefore have most documentation.
Connecting your site
WS_FTP most common FTP application use, so we use version our explanations
below. If you are not using WS_FTP, many answers will remain same, but just in
case they don't you may need refer your FTP manual or help area. If you are using
Fetch Mac, click here help. We are also assuming that you have already installed the
software your workstation.
You will need three pieces information connect your site in
WS_FTP. These pieces were emailed you when you signed up hosting include your domain name, your
userID password.
1.Connect Internet.
2.Open your WS_FTP application. (After install you will probably have a
shortcut your desktop or your Start, Programs menu).
3.You now see two windows, one overlapping other. The one top is
your Session Properties window where you specify your login information.
4.For Profile Name insert whatever you'd like refer login as. You can
name whatever you'd like just easy reference later on.
5.For Host Name/Address insert your domain name or your site's IP address if
your domain name not active your account yet. (If you try your domain name doesn't work, then you can
change this IP included your Welcome email instead). www.yourdomainname.com,
yourdomainname.com or IP#.IP#.IP#.IP# should all work this field.
6.For Host Type you can leave this Automatic Detect or if you are
connecting a Unix server, you can choose Unix (standard).
7.For User ID insert userID emailed you when you signed up account.
This field case sensitive.
8.For Password insert password emailed you when you signed up for
the account. This field case sensitive.
9.All other fields you can leave blank or set default. However, if you'd like
WS_FTP start you off a particular directory either your local machine or
on server, you would configure this Startup tab. If this your first time
connecting, you need not worry about folder you are starting off in.
10.If you'd like you can save your configuration WS_FTP, including the
password, by checking Save Password box.
11.When you are ready connect, click "OK" at bottom of Session
Properties menu.
Publishing
Okay, now you're ready
to publish your pages web! (If you are not, read "connecting your site"
section above).
1.The Session Properties
window now gone, and you are looking at a window split down middle that separates
your local workstation (on left) and web site (on right).
2.On left-hand side,
double-click green arrow pointing up move up a directory, or double-click a
directory enter one.
You might want practice with this a bit. When you are done, you want work your way
to directory your PC containing your web files (depending where you saved them).
3.On right-hand side,
do same left, but double-click enter www directory. This directory
where you will upload your web pages, graphics, etc. Later, when you want use
cgi scripts your site you will FTP cgi-bin.
4.Near bottom of the
WS_FTP window, select "Auto" upload format - or manually select Binary when you
upload your images and ASCII when uploading scripts or pages.
5.On left-hand side,
click once a file highlight it.
6.Click arrow that
points right (towards remote system) middle of FTP.
7.When you see words
"Transfer Complete" at bottom of WS_FTP window transfer done. You
have just uploaded a file.
8.To upload multiple files or
directories at once, simply click one then hold down shift key or control key select
more.
9.You can also publish files
in opposite direction, from server your PC, by highlighting files right and clicking
on arrow that points left.
